'Fan Account of the Month' (#FAOTM) is a fan-appreciation series on Umusic!
At Umusic, we acknowledge and value the efforts of fans from around the world. The passion, dedication, and love fans have for their favourite artists is something the team at Umusic has admired for a long while. For this reason, Umusic has decided to feature a fan account every month. This will give our Umusic community the opportunity to learn about different fandoms, their hardworking members, and more about the artists!
Fan account: A social media account created by a fan dedicated to a particular piece of pop culture. This series will focus on fan accounts dedicated to artists.
Update account: A fan-run social media source for fan accounts. An update account serves as the main source of updates on a specific artist. An update account will gather all media, promotional items, and information on an artist and share the information with other fans. Think of update accounts as a constantly updated Wikipedia for fans. This series will also focus on update accounts, which are simply larger fan accounts.

September's fan account of the month features an Alessia Cara fan account: @AlessiaCWorld! The account is mainly run by Lily and Amanda, an international duo who share the commonality of admiring Alessia. Lily is a fan of Alessia from the US and Amanda is from Brazil – both girls dedicate their time to managing @AlessiaCWorld with the help of a few friends. These Alessia fans specialize in posting Alessia updates that are often tracked by Alessia's fans (of course), Alessia's family, and even some of Alessia's childhood teachers!
The team at Umusic asked the @AlessiaCWorld team questions pertaining to Alessia Cara and fan culture. Below are a collection of Lily's answers:
Who is on the @AlessiaCWorld team?
There are a few of us who run the account. Lily (me, the one answering the questions) is from New Jersey. The account was created a few years ago by Gabriel and Amanda who are both from Brazil, but over time I started to update the account with them. Now, Amanda and I do most of the day-to-day updates on Alessia. Within the last few months, we have added some new members to the team to help us keep up with Shawn Mendes The Tour Updates. Yocelin, who's from Houston, has been a huge part of show updates throughout this tour. Pao, who is from Mexico, is also an important part of our team. We're from all over!
Why are you a fan of Alessia?
I can't imagine not being a fan of her. I became a fan because of her music and how I instantly connected to it the second I heard it. I heard "Here" on the radio right before her first album came out, almost 4 years ago, and I just remember being so intrigued by the person behind it. Its hard to explain but I just felt instantly connected to the song and I knew I needed to listen to the rest of her music when it came out.
As soon as Know-It-All came out, I could not stop listening to it. That album was something I could listen to over and over again and not get sick of it, even to this day. No matter what she puts out, whether its happy, sad, or uncertain, I always find a way to connect with her words, which I think proves how talented she is as a songwriter. Her ability to write songs and connect with all of us so easily is one of the big reasons I'm a fan of her. She makes it feel like she is always there for all of us! We all have pretty similar reasons for being fans of Alessia, but she connects with each of us differently!
Has Alessia ever interacted with the account?
Alessia has interacted with her our account many times, whether she's making fun of herself for doing something funny that we've updated, acknowledging some news about her and her music, or commenting on a project we've created or been a part of. She always seems so appreciative of the work we put into updating, and her and her family and team have expressed how grateful they are to see our updates.
Its crazy that we're a source for her family and even some of her childhood teachers to be able to keep up with her and her success! Not that in any way we update for her to notice our tweets, but sometimes when it hard to spend so much time updating shows and everything, its nice to see that she checks the account and is grateful for everything we do, especially promotional- wise with her music.
One of my favorite interactions was a few weeks ago, she posted something on her story with a new funny microphone she had gotten, and I was thinking to myself how many stories I was going to have to save and post and I tweeted, "Its going to be a long night ladies and gentleman and she quoted it and said, "when even your update account can't stand you."
Has anyone on your team met Alessia?
Yes! I (Lily) met her a few times. I met her before one of her shows on the Know-It-All Part 2 Tour back in 2016, and then once last year, and twice this year. Its the best experience she's the sweetest person in the world. In 2016, when I met her for the first time, I was so nervous I was literally shaking. As soon as I saw her, she immediately recognized me from my other Twitter account even though we had never met before. She made me feel so comfortable and it calmed my nerves down so much. Every time I've met her she's been insanely sweet and normal – its like talking to a friend.
Fingers crossed that Amanda, Yocelin, and Pao are able to meet her soon!
Has your team/account started any fan projects?
We've done a bunch of fan projects! Every time she releases new music, we try to come up with new ways to get everyone involved in promo. When The Pains of Growing dropped last year, Amanda and Carol (the girl that runs a different Alessia update account) worked incredibly hard to create a website and posters to put up around different cities all over the world. Together, we created group chats of people in different cities, and created street teams to go around and help promote the album.We also organize streaming parties for all of Alessia's music and try to get as many people involved as we can.

Additionally, we also always do projects for Alessia's birthday, and this year, along with @alessiacarabr, we created a GoFundMe page to raise money for a children's treatment facility in Alessia's hometown and we were able to raised over $1,000 for this charity.

We also just did a quick little project in support of "Okay Okay" where we posted confident selfies with the lyrics to the song and #OKAYOKAY and Alessia saw it and loved it and even went through and liked a bunch of selfies!

Do you have a favourite Alessia x Shawn Mendes moment?
We loved seeing them have so much fun together off stage throughout the tour! They seemed to always be doing something fun or exploring with their friends and teams, especially during the first part of the tour. We loved seeing her enjoy every second of this tour with Shawn.
Of course the infamous, "He's tall enough to be 21" that Alessia said about Shawn while trying to get into a bar will always be one our favorite memories!
Do you have a favourite 'Alessia on tour' moment?
She always does the funniest things on stage so its so hard to pick! On the goofy end, at a show I attended, when she was opening for Coldplay, she bumped into a microphone stand and then apologized to the mic stand.
On her first tour, she had this stuffed animal that her team stole and made this whole video about him running away, and then the stuffed animal magically appeared in the crowd one night during a show. It was so funny!
On a serious note, she got really emotional while singing "Scars to You Beautiful" in London, and she started crying and said something like: "I don't know why you guys care about me so much but you do, so thank you," and it really hit me hard. It was probably my favorite moment from this tour. She tries to not get emotional on stage but she always winds up crying or doing something super emotional at big shows.
Do you have a favourite Alessia song?
Before she started releasing songs from This Summer it was definitely "River of Tears" from her first album, for personal reasons. Its like the perfect heartbreak song.
I've really been loving "Rooting For You". I love how confident and sure of herself she seems in this song specifically, since she seemed to be trying to find herself in Know-It-All and The Pains of Growing, and with this new music, she seems to have found herself and found a new sense of confidence. I love it!
How are you preparing for the release of Alessia's upcoming EP: This Summer?
THIS SUMMER IS OUT SEPTEMBER 6, 2019.
We're so excited for the release of This Summer! The music from the EP so far has been so upbeat and confident and we love to hear it! We get to watch as Alessia explores new sounds and we get to hear stories from tour and the last few months via the lyrics. Just like The Pains of Growing, Alessia wrote every lyric on This Summer and we love getting to hear about her experiences in her own words.
What makes Alessia different from other pop stars in the world right now?
Alessia is doing her own thing, her own way. She writes her songs 100% on her own, which makes her so unique in the pop world. She is constantly writing and planning future projects while she is on the road for months at a time touring current music.
Alessia has control over so much of her own promo and creative-work for herself. For The Pains of Growing, she shared voice recordings from the writing process of every song and then posted them all online for us to see/hear. She designs all her own merch and she created a "newsman" segment to announce all of her upcoming plans.
She's extremely down-to-Earth and normal. She reads her Twitter timeline constantly and always sees the memes/edits we create of her. Its' so weird calling her a pop star because she seems like a friend.
If you could say one thing to Alessia, what would you say?
We all see how hard she is working and has been working for the past 4 years. We are so appreciative and proud of everything she does on a daily basis. We know it cannot be easy balancing all that she does, but her hard work is not something that any of us take for granted.
We would also thank her for using her platform the way she does and always being herself. It's a beautiful thing to watch other people fall in love with her and her music. We are all so grateful to have her and her art in our lives.
